Bridal Alterations FAQ

When should I schedule my first fitting?
We recommend reaching out to us as soon as you have purchased your dress (yes, even before you have received it) so we can get you on our books! We likely won’t start on your alterations until about 8–10 weeks before needing your wedding dress, especially if you are doing bridal portraits, but it is important to get that first fitting BOOKED.
What is the turnaround time for a wedding dress?
Our standard turnaround is 4–6 weeks.
Do you offer custom veils?
Yes! At Staar Tailors, we offer beautifully handcrafted custom veils designed to complement your gown and personal style. We’ll work with you to create something truly special. Clients are reaponaible for providing their own lace, and we’re happy to guide you through the process. Contact us to learn more.
Do you do wedding dress preservation?
Yes, we do wedding dress preservation. The price starts at $250 and includes up to 5 accessories (veil, jacket, cape, gloves, etc.).
Do you steam dresses?
Yes! Wedding dresses start at $35, bridesmaid dresses are $15, and prom dresses are $20. Steaming is offered only at our Anderson location. Please allow 24 hours for completion.
How many fittings will I need?
On average, we see our clients for 3 fittings. Highly customized dresses (like redesigns, sleeves, or major alterations) may require more visits.
What should I bring to my fitting?
Please bring the shoes, bra, and undergarments you’ll wear with your gown. These significantly affect the fit. Also, we recommend having a light meal beforehand to help you feel comfortable and avoid feeling lightheaded.
Can you add customizations to my dress?
Yes! We’re happy to do additions to your wedding dress. If any extra fabric or materials are needed, please bring them to your fitting — we can’t use material from the hem. Customization examples include: - New sleeves - Neckline changes - Full size takedown - Build-ups - Additional skirt layers - Lining added to bodice Please reach out with any questions before your consultation.
What if my dress needs significant alterations?
If your dress is more than two sizes too large, please inquire in advance. More complex alterations may increase the cost, require more fittings, and take longer. Be sure to schedule your first appointment with plenty of time before your event.
How much should I expect my alterations to cost?
