Our Story
Refugee family from Ukraine to finding success in Spartanburg
Over 30 years after coming to the U.S. as a refugee, Lyubov Garnik the owner of Staar Tailors credits her success to faith and family. Lyubov fled Ukraine with her husband and eight children in 1991. She left the Soviet Union-controlled country so her family could freely practice religious freedom and attend college.
Now, Lyubov owns Staar Tailors Alterations, LLC. She has kept the business in the family and employs several of her daughters who run various parts of the business in Spartanburg and also in Anderson.
Upon arriving in the United States, Lyubov actively searched for a job. She was willing to take any position to help support her family. The former owner of Staar Tailors hired Lyubov after learning she had prior experience with alterations. She began working, specializing in suit sleeve alterations. Her daughters remember her coming home so thankful for this opportunity to work.
In 2003, Lyubov bought the business. Several seamstresses have large families, a life Lyubov understands well. She allows them to work flexible hours to be there for their children, or to participate in church activities during the week.
Several of the shops newest employees recently came with large families to Spartanburg from war-torn parts of Ukraine. Now Lyubov says our goal is not to just provide for ourselves but also each employee and their family.
When you support Staar Tailors you support our seamstresses and their families.
